Base Filtering Engine (BFE) service is present on the system:

1. First of all you need to launch the “Control Panel” and then click on “Administrative Tools”. Further you need to open “Services”. Then you need to search for Base Filtering Engine in the services list. If the service is on the list, you need to verify its status. If the status reads “Stopped”, then you have to right-click on it and select “Properties”. Then make sure the startup type is set to Automatic, and then click on Start.

2. Once the process is completed, you have to restart “Windows”.

3. Now, if you are prompted with the “Access Denied” error message during the time you start the service, it indicates that you have to set proper permissions for the service in Window Registry.

4. Now, troubleshoot the permissions for BFE in the registry with the following steps-

• first of all you need to open “Registry Editor”
• Further, direct to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\services\\BFE\
• Now, you have to right-click on the BFE key and then choose “Permission”. 
• Next, click “Add” and then enter “Everyone” and further click “OK” 
• Once you complete the above procedure, at the top, you need to click on “Everyone”.  Further, check the Allow Full Control checkbox below.
• Eventually, you have to click “OK” in order to dismiss this dialog.  

5. Then, you have to reboot Windows and check the service could be started using the instructions.

Base Filtering Engine (BFE) service is NOT present on the system:

1. Here, you need to launch “Control Panel” and then click on Administrative Tools. Further, you have to open “Services”. In the services list, check for the Base Filtering Engine. If the service is not on the list, it needs to be installed.

2. Now, you have to download the BFE_repair.zip archive and then unpack the archive. Here, you have to double-click on the BFE_repair file. Click OK / Merge to acknowledge the installation of the file in your Windows Registry.

3. Reboot the computer and set proper permissions for the service in the Windows Registry.

4. Fix permissions for BFE in the registry:

• Here, you have performed the same step as similar to the above procedure, launch  “Registry Editor” 
• Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\services\\BFE\\
• Now, you have to right-click on the BFE key and then choose “Permissions”. Further, click “Add” and enter “Everyone”. Now click “OK”.
• Now, follow the onscreen instructions and then click “OK” to dismiss the dialog.  

5. Reboot Windows and verify that the service can be started.
